Furniture

What holds the empty space

Furniture in letterpress is the spacing material — reglet, leads, quads — that holds empty space in the chase so the type does not collapse. In campaign composing, furniture is everything that holds the pauses: the week nothing ships, the channel that stays quiet, the sentence deliberately omitted.

This page is not about interior design. It is about why the best campaigns leave room.

Pacing is furniture at season scale. Not every week carries equal weight. We map heavy weeks and light weeks in the season document so your team does not fill quiet weeks with noise because the calendar looks empty.

Silence is furniture at line scale. Some arguments are stronger when a point is not made — when the reader's inference does the work. We mark silences explicitly in the narrative spine so no one fills them during production.

Channel quiet is furniture at surface scale. Not every channel needs to speak every week. A quiet social feed during a sustain beat is not neglect — it is composed restraint. Channel sheets note when quiet is intentional.

Clients sometimes ask us to fill every gap. We push back when filling would crush the line. Furniture is not waste; it is structure.

Consider a product launch: the week after announcement is often overloaded while the week before is empty. Furniture maps that rhythm — composed quiet before, composed sustain after — so the message breathes. Without furniture, teams fill quiet weeks because the calendar looks bare, and the line fatigues.

Furniture appears in channel sheets as explicit notes: "no post this week — sustain beat". Producers must see silence as an instruction, not an omission.

Season documents include a furniture map alongside the beat map — which weeks are heavy, which are light, which channels stay quiet entirely. Without both maps, teams optimise for activity instead of composition.

Spacing in the sequence

Furniture in letterpress is the metal spacing that holds form in place. In campaigns it is the deliberate gap: the channel that stays quiet, the claim withheld until the second movement, the pause between launch and sustain. Clients often ask us to fill every slot. We push back when the sequence needs room to breathe.

Empty space is not absence of strategy. It is strategy. A quarter with three loud channels and two silent ones can outperform five channels shouting the same line. We document spacing decisions in the lockup so production teams do not fill gaps by habit.

Spacing decisions appear in channel calendars as explicit silence — weeks where no new claim appears, surfaces where last season's line still holds, internal mail that does not preview public language early. We document these choices so production teams do not fill gaps by habit. When a client asks to add a fourth message to a three-message quarter, we return to the furniture: something must move or the chase unlocks.
