What sits between the form and the press
In letterpress, the tympan is the layer that protects the type from being crushed when pressure is applied. In composing, it is the set of rules that protect the message when production pressure arrives — deadlines, stakeholders, channel demands, the urge to add one more line.
Every launch run and campaign season includes tympan rules written into the lockup. They name what is padded, what is held back, and who stands between the draft and the channel.
Padding is deliberate space around the core line — alternate phrasings, shorter variants, footnotes that can be stripped without breaking meaning. Padding is composed in advance, not improvised under pressure.
Holdback names what must not run yet — a detail awaiting legal read, a segment waiting on an event, a channel that would crush the line if opened too early. Holdbacks are dated and visible on the make-ready sheet.
Gatekeeper is the named person who releases work from draft to channel. One gatekeeper per run; no parallel approvals that contradict. If your organisation requires committee sign-off, we map it into a sequence — not a simultaneous free-for-all.
Tympan rules are revisited at each season gate. Pressure changes — a launch moves forward, a stakeholder departs — and the tympan must be adjusted in writing, not by assumption.
Clients sometimes ask us to remove tympan layers to save time. We explain what will crush if they do. If they accept the risk in writing, we note it on the lockup — but we do not recommend it. A message without padding is a message that breaks on first contact with production.
Tympan also governs internal channels. A draft that circulates widely before the line is locked can crush the external run before it starts. Holdback rules apply inside the organisation, not only outward.
During launch runs, tympan is reviewed daily — not because the rules change daily, but because pressure tries to. A single authorised gatekeeper prevents the "small tweak" that becomes a new line.
We document tympan decisions on the same sheet family as make-ready so producers see protection and permission together — not scattered across email threads that no one reads under deadline.

Who stands between
The tympan is the soft layer that absorbs shock in letterpress. In our studio it names the people and processes that keep a locked message from being flattened by production urgency. A tympan layer includes the writer who rejects a headline rewrite, the art director who refuses off-brand colour, and the producer who sends a channel back to the bench when the copy drifts.
Clients choose how thick the tympan is in the lockup. Some want the studio to stand between draft and channel entirely. Some want documentation and spot checks only. Either way, the layer is named in writing so no one discovers it missing mid-run.
